A Day in the Garden

Despite living in Oxford for 20 years, and although it has been on my "places to visit" list for a long time, I had never been to The University Botanical Garden until today. It's the oldest botanical garden in the uk, having been here for 380 years!

Here is what I found there.

The Palm House with Magdelen College Tower in the background.

Gold wind veins on top of the four main turrets
against the blue blue sky.
I am wondering how they stay so clean?

An innocent looking flower in The Insectivorous House.
Dangerous for flies..

A fossil in The Fern House

A tree from South America with built in snake!

Spring and silver birches.
Somehow I find it impossible to capture the luminescence
of these beautiful ethereal trees.

A cheeky devil overlooking the Lily pond

And three of life's essentials...

Chocolate

Coffee

Cotton

Oh my, I just saw this post and thought 'Wow, that looks just like like Oxford!' I'm from the USA and just happened to be in Oxford (and Cambridge, sorry!) this past January. What a wonderful time we had and my college daughter wears her Oxford hoody all the time!!

I was bought up in Bicester and when we went shopping in Oxford we always had to drive past a big wall (I think it was the college) that had these large, ugly gargoyle heads on them and I can remember looking out for them and then being too afraid to look at them properly. I expect if I ever found that wall again, they wouldn't be that scary, but that is always what I think of when somebody talks about Oxford.
That and Morse!

Lovely photos. I've spent many a happy hour snoozing in the Botanic Gardens - usually when I was supposed to be writing essays ;-)

Looks lovely, I love Oxford we stayed there about 10 years ago and had a fabby time. It's funny how we don't visit places near to us :)

It's a glorious place. Philip Pullman loves it so much that he featured heavily in one of his books.

I love the botanical gardens - such a beautiful spot. You've been really busy since I last popped in (my laptop died!). Sounds like you had a lovely time in Bath - what a lovely birthday treat. I would happily live in either Bath or Oxford, not quite sure how I managed to end up here!
